The experience of sleeping in a treehouse at Maquenque Eco-lodge in Boca Tapada, each treehouse is around 10-12 meters above the ground so you are really at the same level as the monkeys.

Road to Boca Tapada

How to get there?

Boca Tapada is located in the very north of Costa Rica, very close to the border with Nicaragua, and it is part of the province Alajuela.

The road to get to the Maquenque Ecolodge is a long dirt road with lots of potholes in it and rocks, you will pass by just a few houses so quickly you really feel like in the middle of nowhere. Which is great! And that is not all, you will have to leave your car in their private and secured parking lot and cross the river with the boat before you are really at the lodge. Makes it feel even more special.

Why add Boca Tapada to your trip?

If you want to experience real nature, peace, and quiet, then Boca Tapada is a perfect destination for you.

Perfect for birdwatching, but thanks to the great chill-out area with hanging chairs, the coffee bar, and a great pool, you can also really relax at this place.

Maquenque Ecolodge is a family-owned hotel, we got a great tour of the property, almost all the vegetables, eggs, meat, milk, cheese, fruits, etc, are produced right there on the property. Of course, you taste that, as they prepare delicious fresh meals for their guests.

Boca San Carlos

Boat tour on the San Carlos River

There are different tours available, we went on a guided birdwatching tour and on a fun boat tour to a very small town called Boca Rio San Carlos.

There is a school, a police station, a hostel and that’s about it. People live there right across the Nicaraguan border, which is on the other side of the river.

During the boat tour you can spot many birds, but don’t swim… there are many crocodiles in the San Carlos River.

You can also take the farm tour, where they will show you around their farm, where the vegetables, cheese, and pretty much all the food in the restaurant are produced.

Maquenque Ecolodge

Bungalow or treehouse?

We really loved sleeping in the treehouse, but keep in mind that it’s very high (10-12 meters) so not really suited if you have trouble with stairs, heights, or if you are traveling with small kids.

In order to get to the treehouse, you will have to walk through the forest in the dark, so if you don’t really like that, then it’s better to stay in one of the nice bungalows.

The bungalows are close to the restaurant and common areas, but also offer a nice comfortable and relaxed stay, especially because they are close to the lake and on the edge of the forest.

Each treehouse and bungalow has its own terrace/balcony, mini-fridge, coffee maker, and a private bathroom with hot water.
